2012 promises gratification for sci-fi films and action buffs, with a little thrown in for the rest of us. Call it, the season of the sequel. Or prequel, in some cases.
Blame or praise the marketing engine as you will, these are the big ticket movies of summer. Also big this summer is the 3D action movie as more and more studios climb on the eye-pop bandwagon. Justanother dimension for film buffs? Here's our list of what promises to be box office champs in 2012:
1.Men in Black III -  A follow through sequel to Men in Black II which appeared almost a decade ago. With  more a less a similar cast this movie takes on time as well as aliens, for maximum fun. What a hoot to see K as a young man in black. Oh, and it's 3D.

2.The Dictator - looks like Cohen is trying to recreate the Borat magic, inspired by the novel Zabibah and the king a novel by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
3. What to Expect When You are Expecting - a story revolving around 5 couples who are going through the child birth process. An out and out chick flick. The key difference from other summer blockbusters is the departure from the formula violence and action.
4.The Avengers - The three super heroes from the marvel comics, The incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America all come together for a mega super adventure. This has got to be one of those movies which adventure lovers are eagerly awaiting and looks promising in content and context.

5.Battleship - already delayed twice this sci-fi naval war film directed by Peter berg (Hancock) although it will fight in the box office for the sci-fi fan with some tough competition.
6. Rock of Ages - Our big hope, an adaptation of a largely popular broadway musical with start studded line up of Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Russel brand makes it stand apart from the other releases slated during the summer of 2012.
7. Madagascar 3 - A sequel of the previous two movies, a franchise product.
8. Ice Age 4 or the Continental Drift - pretty much the same as the above.
9.Prometheus - This one is actually a prequel to his own smash hit Aliens. A horror sci-fi directed by Ridley Scott should excite fans who love this genre of films.
10.The Expendables 2 - another sequel... doesn't it seem like we're running out of ideas here. Sylvester Stallone may have his critics but his box office bells do keep ringing. Arnold Schwarzenegger is slated to make an appearance despite the problems in his personal life. Bruce Willis has also been added to the cast which could only help the movies cause.
11. Total Recall - This time they are calling it a remake of the 1990 movie with Collin Farrell and Kate Beckingsale  cast in the leading roles. But how do you beat Arnie?
12.The Dark Knight Rises - Another one that will interest the adventure genre lovers with the anticipation levels quite high. The principal cast is back with  the addition of Tom hardy, Gordon Levitt and Anne Hathaway as Cat Woman.
You'll have to wait till Christmas for "The Great Gatsby" starring Leonardo Di Caprio  with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bacchan making in an appearance and could well be the movie of the year if handled well.
There you have it, twelve likely blockbusters in the year of the franchise.
