Asian Film Review: Finding Mr. Destiny

By Nik Joseph

It's hard to resist a pun when I'm reviewing a movie called "Finding Mr. Destiny." I'll resist. Really, I will resist…
I enjoy Korean films for their different take on comedy, their endearing romances and even their high melodrama—because they do it so well. Finding Mr. Destiny excels in all three area's, in a comedic story revolving around The Cyrano Agency—a dating service which helps people who can't find a date.

I didn't have high expectations of the them, but it's quite an enchanting movie, actually.
The cast really brought the story to life—and it never hurts that most of the cast are stunningly beautiful or handsome. I like a movie for escape, so I value the light, happy moments. Finding Mr. Destiny is definitely light and happy and even, with the captivating performances of actor Gong Yoo as Han Ki-joon, I might even say awesome. The plot isn't particularly complicated but I still felt satisfied with the lively story. There are no dull moments, and all characters, major and minor, played strong roles. There are no irksome moments in the film which yank you back to reality. The lead actress is Im Soo-jeon as Suh Ji-woo, a class act.

Above: Gong Yoo, during his time off. Gong Yoo is one of the most popular Korean lead actors.

Dare I say the film is adorable. But, I like that. This film just offered up a very optimistic, feel good vibe. The love scenes are genuine and emotional, made especially real by Gong Yoo's performance. He is at the same time puppy dog endearing and funny and romantic. Im Soo-Jeon was his perfect opposite. I was fascinated by the Cinderella changes of her life. The entire theme is touching and hilarious at the same time. The scenes with Im Soo-Jeon on blind dates are fun. It's very hard not to fall in love with the characters.
I could say that this film Finding Mr. Destiny is a the perfect feel good  movie. If you're into Korean film, known for romantic comedy, you'll find this to be top of the genre. If you're into romantic comedy, and haven't experience Korean film, be prepared for a life-changing experience.
